The Uncertainty Project
An inquiry into what sustained collaboration with AI makes possible, where it misleads, and what the work requires of its author.
The collaboration
Jason Elijah develops the Human Return Library through extensive dialogue with AI. That collaboration contributes substantially to organizing ideas, examining connections, drafting, and revision.
Jason chooses the questions, shapes the connections, evaluates proposals, directs revisions, and decides what he is prepared to publish. He takes responsibility for the work he releases.
The inquiry concerns both the resulting work and the process: how a useful connection is distinguished from an appealing pattern, how errors are found, and what remains unresolved.
What needs examination.
Fluent language can make a weak argument feel complete. A coherent framework can flatten differences. Agreement from an AI system can reinforce a preferred interpretation instead of testing it.
The work therefore needs specific checks: evidence for factual claims, alternatives to favored explanations, attention to contradictory passages, and readers able to judge the writing independently of this collaboration. Naming those checks does not establish that every passage has passed them.
Two decisions from building this site.
These records concern the website’s development. They illustrate choices and corrections without standing in for an evaluation of the books.
Restoring the project’s wider purpose
The starter pages emphasized uncertainty, interpretation, and correction. Reviewing them against the project documents showed that embodiment, freedom, community, beauty, and the conditions of flourishing were much less visible. The revised gateway and principles give those concerns more space. The first version was coherent, but it represented only part of the intended project.
Choosing the opening collection
The first Library page presented twelve books drawn from several parts of the wider catalog. Jason chose instead to launch with the fourteen Threshold books. The revised Library follows that decision. The AI’s proposed arrangement was material for consideration; the author determined the public scope.
The work remains answerable.
The use of AI does not establish accuracy, originality, or value. Those qualities must be examined in the work itself. Further process records can make particular decisions, limitations, and corrections visible as they are documented.
